The Risk of "Hot Wallets" and Exchanges

When you hold cryptocurrency, you are not holding digital files. You are holding a private key—a long, secret password that gives you ownership and control over your coins on the blockchain. Whoever knows this key, controls the funds.

Most people start their crypto journey by buying on an exchange. When you do this, the exchange holds your private keys for you. This is known as a "custodial" service. 6. The Trezor device "signs" the transaction internally using your private key and sends only the safe, signed transaction back to Trezor Suite, which then broadcasts it to the network.

Your private key never touches your internet-connected computer. A hacker could be watching your screen, logging your keystrokes, and they still couldn't steal your funds because they cannot physically press the "confirm" button on your device.
